Stay Healthy This Winter: Simple Steps to Protect Your Health

Jun 29, 2026 | Medical News

As the temperature drops, winter brings more than just chilly mornings—it also marks the peak season for colds, influenza and other respiratory illnesses. While it’s common to experience the occasional winter bug, there are simple steps you can take to reduce your risk and keep yourself and your family healthy throughout the colder months.

At RealCare Health Clinic, we believe prevention is one of the best forms of healthcare. Looking after your health now can help you avoid more serious illness later in the season.

Influenza is more than just a bad cold. It can lead to serious complications, particularly for older adults, young children, pregnant women and people living with chronic medical conditions.

If you haven’t had your annual flu vaccination, it’s not too late. Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of severe illness and protect those around you.

If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible for a free flu vaccine under the National Immunisation Program, our team can help.

While many winter illnesses improve within a few days, it’s important to seek medical advice if you experience:

  • A cough lasting longer than three weeks
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • High fever that doesn’t improve
  • Chest pain
  • Wheezing
  • Symptoms that continue to worsen rather than improve

Early assessment can help identify conditions such as pneumonia, asthma flare-ups or other infections before they become more serious.

Winter can make existing medical conditions more difficult to manage.

If you have asthma, diabetes, heart disease, COPD or other chronic conditions, regular check-ups can help ensure your treatment plan is working effectively throughout the colder months.

A review with your GP may include:

  • Reviewing medications
  • Updating management plans
  • Monitoring blood pressure or blood sugar
  • Discussing any new symptoms

There is no magic solution for preventing illness, but healthy habits make a real difference.

This winter, try to:

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables
  • Stay physically active, even with a daily walk
  • Get adequate sleep each night
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Stay home if you’re unwell to help protect others

Shorter days and colder weather can affect mood and motivation.

Make time to stay connected with family and friends, enjoy some sunshine when possible and continue activities you enjoy. If you’ve been feeling persistently low, anxious or overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to speak with your GP. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and support is available.

A winter check-up is a good opportunity to discuss any health concerns, review ongoing conditions and make sure you’re well prepared for the season ahead.

Whether you need a flu vaccination, have a lingering cough, require a medication review or simply haven’t had a check-up for some time, our experienced team is here to help.
